The Evolution of the Strata Product Line
Introduction
The information in this bulletin is provided as a reference to compare past and present versions of Strata
products. This information will assist you in determining what features and options can be added to your
existing customer base of Strata systems. It will help explain to your Strata customers what capabilities
they have in their systems compared to current products, and what they gain when upgrading from older
to newer Strata systems.
This information will also enable you to show prospective customers the ongoing progression of
enhancements and new product development within the Strata product line. This is proof of Toshiba's
commitment to an evolving product line strategy, keeping Strata products up with developing trends and
new requirements in the telecommunication system industry.
Strata Product History
1978 – 1981: The Strata product line has a long and rich history. It started back in 1978 with the Strata
III, Toshiba's first electronic, stored program key system. The Strata III was one of the first “skinny wire”
systems on the market and led the way to the development of future Strata products. With each new
product model, and each new software version, Toshiba has continually enhanced features and
capabilities.
1982 – 1985: The Strata VI first appeared in 1982 and was Toshiba's first microprocessor-based
electronic key system. It set the stage for development of a family of Strata systems, with the introduction
of the smaller Strata S, and larger Strata XII and XX in 1983.
1986 – 1988: The Strata "e" release brought additional capabilities to the Strata S, VI, XII, and XX
systems in June 1986. In March 1988, Release 2 brought more new capabilities to the Strata Se, VIe,
XIIe, and XXe, making Strata one of the most feature rich families of hybrid/key systems on the market.
1989: In the late 1980's, digital technology began to enter the key systems market. Toshiba's first digital
key telephone system was the Strata DK in 1989. The DK56 and DK96 replaced the XIIe and XXe in the
Strata product line and set the standard architecture for our digital product line.
1990: Strata DK Release 2 brought many important enhancements to the DK56 and DK96 systems. At
that same time in 1990, Toshiba also introduced the DK24, bringing digital technology farther down the
size range of the Strata product line. The DK24 also filled an important need for a system sized between
the 6x16 Strata VIe and the Strata DK56.
1991 – 1992: Strata DK Release 3 in 1991 introduced Strata DK24/56/96 systems to digital telephones
and data switching, both for the first time in the Strata product line. Then, in 1992, Release 4 brought
